How Many Movers Do I Really Need

We are here at iMoving to explain what manpower you need, where you can cut corners, and really give you a clue into how many movers you need for the big moving day.

We will give you the main factors to take into consideration.

Real Talk- How Many Mover Do I Actually Need

Let’s be honest if you are like me and prefer to cut corners to save up for that Mexico vacation instead of extra manpower on your move, then read on. The manpower aspect depends on a few more factors.

We will break them down for you:

Main Questions to Ask Yourself

Size does matter. Check below the size of your home to get an understanding of basic needs.

  1. Studio or Tiny Apartment: For a small space with minimal furniture and boxes of items, you may only need 2 movers. This is typically enough to handle loading and unloading items efficiently. Many companies don’t like to do such small moves, so you may need a moving company that specializes in small moves.
  2. 1-2 Bedroom Apartment or Small House: A slightly larger space may require 2-3 movers. This will allow for faster loading and unloading, especially if there are heavier items like furniture or appliances. If they need to assemble furniture they need to know in advance since they are a small team.
  3. 3-4 Bedroom Home: For a larger home with more rooms and belongings, you'll need 3-4 movers or more, depending on the amount of furniture and boxes you have. Let your moving company give you a more accurate estimate, but on average up to 5 movers makes sense.
  4. Large Home and Specialty Items: If you have a very large home or estate, lots of heavy furniture, things to disassemble, and/or specialty items (like a piano or large safe), you may need 5+ movers to handle the job efficiently and safely. Don’t cheap out on the man labor as the move won’t go over smoothly and you’ll end up spending more on broken items.

What Else Matters

  • Time Constraints: If you need to move quickly, having more movers can speed up the process. If you need to be out of your current home by a certain time or in general in a rush, don’t skimp on manpower.
  • Distance: If you're moving locally close by, you might be able to get by with fewer movers than you would need compared to a long-distance move where efficiency in loading and unloading becomes more critical as time is a factor.
  • Complexity: If there are stairs that don’t allow room for items to pass through, slow or tiny elevators, or tight spaces involved with tight corners at either the pickup or delivery location, more movers may be needed to navigate these challenges successfully.
  • Budget: While more movers may make the move go faster, it also increases costs significantly as movers of manual labor come at a high rate with high insurance costs for their employer.. Balancing efficiency with budget considerations is important so plan ahead accordingly.

Bottom Line Movers

All in all, it's recommended to get quotes from moving companies based on your specific needs and speak to them about the number of movers they recommend for your move.

iMoving’s platform allows for this without having to take the time for multiple calls.  We provide insights based on experience and manpower expertise to make sure your move is handled efficiently and within your budget.

Take into consideration the size of your home, the complexity of the move, and any extra time constraints you might have, but overall work with a moving company you trust to succeed your move.

Essential FAQs for Your Move

For a large move, such as a multi-bedroom house, we recommend at least four movers to ensure efficiency and safety.

Yes, the size of your home significantly impacts the number of movers. Larger homes require more movers to handle the volume of items and expedite the move.

Having your own moving inventory list is likely to be helpful for insurance claims and just to keep things clear when packing and unpacking.

This list will be your guide to knowing everything that needs to fit in your new home.

Consider the size of your move, the distance of relocation, specific handling needs (like pianos or antiques), and the level of service desired, from packing to assembly.

Companies evaluate the inventory, access conditions, and move distance. iMoving tailors mover allocation based on these factors to maximize efficiency.

Hiring more movers can be cost-effective as it typically reduces the total hours needed, minimizing overall costs and reducing disruption to your schedule.

Too few movers can lead to longer move times, increased physical strain on the team, potential damage to belongings, and higher overall costs due to inefficiencies.
