A Local Floridian's Guide to Living Within Your Means

Sunny vibes, beautiful women in bikinis, and spring break party vibes, what more could you ask for? Oh wait, we forgot to mention that Florida is the home to Disney Word.

We want to help you with our own version of the “fast pass” but our fast pass won’t just get you to Magic Mountain, but rather set off on your moving journey with our iMoving experts. Donald Duck would agree!

You don’t have to root for the Gators or think it will rain on your parade to be a Floridian! You can be a Seminoles fan and yet still read our guide (although we will think less of you!) Check out our guide written by a former Florida local to understand the FL vibes a bit more and see where you can save!

Florida Stereotypes

  • It's not called the packed and loaded state for nothing! Concealed carry licenses are simple to get in FL due to state regulations so expect liberal views on the subject
  • Suns out guns out! Get ready for spring break like you’ve never seen it before! Especially in areas like Palm Beach and Miami, all the partygoers of America come to Florida to drink like there's no tomorrow while dancing their hearts out.
  • The food scene is incredible thanks to the melting pot of cultures that Florida boasts. You can expect Latin culture mixed with Afro-Carribean foods and incredible Asian delights in any part of Florida that you go
  • Fishing isn’t just a sport, it’s a lifestyle- expect to find many fishermen here! The local men love spending their weekends fishing on long boat trips with many cold beers!

Local Areas that are Actually Affordable to Live in

While Florida is quite an expensive state to call home, there are still some remaining areas that you and your family can call home without breaking the bank completely. Check them out and we think you’ll be surprised.

  • Tampa Bay (especially the Southern part) is a great suburb for the whole family that is actually budget-friendly.
  • Jacksonville, a huge city with many different areas that are quite charming is an excellent option for those looking to save while having access to convenient places in the city.
  • Orlando when you take a few steps back from the craziness of Disney is a surprisingly cheap place to live as a family. You can also make extra income in the summer months by renting out your home and can go travel with the funds. Orlando offers many job opportunities in the tourism realm as well.
  • Melbourne is another great choice with an impressive space industry offering many job opportunities. The West side of the city and Palm Bay is an extra affordable option with a lower cost of living.

Expensive as Hell Spots you Shouldn’t Call Home in FL

Florida is known as an extra expensive state to call home, but certain areas are pricier than others. Depending on your field of work and your need to be close to Miami, you might be able to live further out of the city to save.

Check out a few of our luxury favorites that are way out of our budget for sure.

  • Miami’s luxury life of clubs where you can see and be seen isn't for everyone. To live in Miami, you need to eat at the hottest restaurants and check out all the best clubs each night to know who’s who. A beachfront condo in Miami Beach might actually cost an arm and a leg these days. As well, when world-class concerts are showing, you won’t be able to get an Uber for less than $100 no matter what you do.
  • Naples is a Gulf Coast master spot, with upscale shopping for the top of the top and incredible golf courses for every level. Naples is a wonderful spot if you can afford it! Expect lots of boat owners and to see many housewives during Audis.
  • Sarasota on the Gulf Coast as well with incredible upscale waterfront property options. Longboat Key and Todelo are some of the best spots according to locals. You can find many estates here of the rich and the famous so keep an eye out!

Money Saving Tips for Your Florida Life

While life in Florida doesn't come cheap, it is well worth it! With some simple tips, you can save a dollar or 10 while living in the Sunshine State.

  • Look for discounts wherever possible. Many places offer specials for senior citizens, students, or local residents. Discounts really do add up so don’t take this lightly! Whether it be at the supermarket, the local veggie shop, or the bagel place, every dollar counts!
  • Utility cost reduction will save you hundreds of dollars over the year! Florida can be quite hot and sticky so you will need AC, but try to be mindful of your usage. If you leave one room ensure to turn off the lights and the AC which is an expensive use of electricity. Use water smartly, turn off the tap when brushing your teeth or washing dishes, and be mindful of your consumption not just for your wallet, but also for the globe.
  • Shop in bulk! When you buy from superstores such as Costo, you can buy bigger packages for the whole family. Things are much cheaper when you buy in bulk, so even if you don’t have a large family, consider sharing a membership and food items with your neighbors to save smarter, together.
  • Free activities are the key to saving tons of money! The beach is a great day activity that doesn't have to cost a penny. Pack sandwiches and water bottles from home, and you are on your way to enjoy the day at no cost! There are also many amazing natural parks with flamingos and alligators that can be visited for small conservation fees with the kids. Ask for your resident discounts!
  • Choose a location in Florida that is realistically affordable in the long run for your family! Make sure you take into consideration all the costs surrounding your spot such as school fees, after-school activity fees, and the cost of food and restaurants in your area. For example, even if you can afford a small apartment in Miami, the cost of living is so high it might not be worth taking that job in the city.

Lets wrap this up, Florida style with extra bubble wrap on the side

Overall, Florida is an excellent place to live whether single and ready to mingle in the clubs, with your third child, or in your golden senior years. The proximity to the beach, natural parks, and incredible dining options make Florida the perfect state! Don't forget about the incredible sunny weather, cruises, and cheap flight options to Central America.
