There’s a storage unit in pretty much every shape and size, so your options are nearly limitless:
- 5’ x 5’: Your basic 5’ x 5’ unit is about the size of a closet. These are great if you’ve got a few extra items or just need a spot to hide your holiday decorations for the time being.
- 10’ x 10’: Moving on up, you’ve got 10’ x 10’ storage units, that (if you’re good at Tetris) can hold the contents of a studio apartment.
- 10’ x 20’: The classic 10’ x 20’ is about the size of a one-car garage. Thanks to these dimensions, they’re great for vehicle storage.
- 20’ x 20’: Barring the specialty shops, 20’ x 20’ is about where things top out. These are the size of a two-car garage. If you have A LOT of extra stuff, you’ll need one of these.
Sell it off, donate it, or hand it down to family and friends who’ll get good use from it. Storage isn’t free, and bigger units come with a bigger price tag.
It may be hard to say goodbye, but it’s cheaper to downsize than to hold on to furniture and other belongings you don’t have a place for.
Depending on where you’re moving, you may need a climate controlled unit. Some places offer A/C, some offer heating, and some offer both.
Fragile electronics need to be kept cool so they don’t fry during the hotter months. Painting and wood items can warp if exposed to extreme cold. And of course, you always want to control humidity.

Storage providers have similar ground rules to movers: You’re not allowed to store anything that can potentially damage your unit (or the whole complex, for that matter).
This means no explosives, non perishable items, and nothing that’s wet or pressurized. Firearms are also a no-go. If you need a place to store your guns, certain gun shops rent locker space.
